On Monday my father, for whom I have tremendous respect, won the Canadian General Counsel Award. I couldn't be prouder of him - he didn't start life with any of the advantages that he has given me, and yet he has worked to achieve more than I could ever imagine.

Patrick Garver of Barrick Gold Corp. scored top honours Monday night at the second annual National Post-ZSA Canadian General Counsel Awards.
The crowd of 425 people -- many the cream of Canada's legal community -- rose to its feet when Barrick's executive vice-president and general counsel was named the 2006 Canadian General Counsel of the Year .
Mr. Garver, who was nominated in two categories, Dealmaking and Litigation Management, steered Barrick through a complex $10.4-billion hostile takeover of Placer Dome Inc. last year that transformed the company into the world's largest gold producer.
A Utah-native who practiced law in Salt Lake City before he joined Toronto-based Barrick in 1993, Mr. Garver seemed genuinely moved by the recognition.
He told the black-tie crowd, which included general counsel from many of Canada's best-known corporations, that because he wasn't born here, hadn't gone to law school here or practiced with a Bay Street firm before joining Barrick, he's always felt like an outsider in the Canadian legal establishment.
He said he was honoured and touched, as well as surprised. "When my family immigrated to Canada 12 years ago, I didn't expect anything like this," he said. "Probably my high point of legal training in Canada was studying with my wife for the Canadian citizenship exam."
He extended his thanks to Barrick's internal and external counsel, especially his longtime advisers at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg, saying "the truth is, if you get nominated for something like this, or recognized for something like this, it is the fruits of someone else's labour.
"This is no exception."
